So I'm not really that big into spicy foods, but Bill IS! He loves spicy stuff. A while ago when we bought our baby tomato plants at the farmer's market he also picked up some baby jalapeno plants. We weren't really sure what to expect with those.
About three weeks ago I harvested 13 beautiful little jalapenos! I'm sorry I didn't take pictures before they disappeared into Bill's tummy...I let a few of them ripen to a beautiful red color and took some others while they were still green. I read that the red ones have a sweeter flavor but Bill really couldn't tell the difference. This is the recipe I used those peppers in, and he loved it!
A few weeks after we bought the baby plants I saw one of those little mini-greenhouses at Home Depot that you can use to start seeds. I've tried those before with mixed success, but this time there were two cute little kits: one of Italian herbs and one with three different kinds of peppers. Feeling adventurous I bought them and started some seeds, never really thinking we might actually get some cool peppers!
Check out the bountiful pepper harvest we're about to have! First are what are called Hot Portugals. Next is the Santiago Hybrid variety. There's one more plant that the picture came out too fuzzy to post, they are Sweet Cayenne peppers. They look a lot like the Hot Portugals. It's like a pepper explosion at my place! From the Italian herb kit, I now have nice basil, oregano, and parsley plants, along with the rosemary and mint I already had. What a joy to watch the tiny little baby seedlings grown into gorgeous plants that are actually producing things to eat! I guess I got some gardening genes from Papaw after all. I have wonderful memories of helping him in the vegetable garden in his backyard.
I'd heard that harvesting all the jalapeno's would stimulate the plants to start more growth...so far there's just one sad little lonely pepper growing, but lots of flowering buds, so I'm hopeful to have another jalapeno harvest soon!
Besides the jalapenos, Bill's never heard of the other pepper varieties...here's to hoping he likes them, otherwise we're going to be giving away a lot of salsa!

Glad to hear that you got the gardening gene from Papaw. Every spring I start yearning for a garden..but I'm always so busy that it never materializes. I also have fond memories of that garden in Irving. It's rather appropriate that they lived on Garden Oaks.
those look awesome!!! I planted some adorable gerbera daisies (my favorite) but the kids took the liking to picking the flowers off and digging in the dirt.
And oohhh how my mouth waters for some home made salsa... the jarred stuff doesn't cut it.
Did Laura tell you about her backyard plant? Apparently last fall Jackson dumped his jack o lantern guts out in the backyard when carving pumpkins...they now have a vine with pumpkins growing on it! He must have gotten Papaw's genes too. :)
